Qualified Pendennis apprentices visit New Zealand on exchange

Sept 2009

Pendennis Shipyard employees Chris Pollard and Tim Featherstone – Harvey will shortly leave Falmouth on a 3 month exchange with New Zealand superyacht builder Fitzroy Yachts. Chris and Tim started at Pendennis in August 2004 as apprentices and after four years on the yards General Apprenticeship Scheme qualified as a Joiner and Engineer respectively.

Both have since moved on to the company’s Post Apprenticeship Scheme which encourages graduates to pursue further technical training such as a HNC or foundation degree, as well as supervisory level training to help them potentially be managers of the future. It is as part of this scheme that they both were invited to take part in the first exchange opportunity set up between the two companies. The main aim of the scheme is to help broaden the horizons of the qualified apprentices by allowing them to continue gaining experience in their respective trades in another superyacht business on the other side of the world.  Pendennis is expecting two Fitzroy employees to join their ranks in the near future to complete the first exchange.

Jill Carr, Training Manager at Pendennis commented “We hope that this will be the start of numerous exchanges between ourselves and Fitzroy. The positions are limited on the scheme and are highly contested amongst the apprentices at both companies. Chris and Tim have been lucky enough to be selected to represent Pendennis in this first exchange and we hope that they learn from and enjoy the experience.”

Fitzroy Yachts MD, Rodney Martin added “We are looking forward to welcoming the two guys to the Fitzroy team and showing them our part of the world and how we construct yachts. We are enjoying the relationship we have with Pendennis, and our own apprentices are eager to start their stint in Cornwall.”
